Origin, classification and history

Origin: Finland.
F.C.I classification: Group 6 - hounds and dogs by blood trail.

The Finnish Hound (Suomenajokoira) has very ancient origins and unfortunately, like many other breeds, completely unknown. The official recognition of the breed by the International Cynological Federation took place only after the Second World War, but the breed had already existed for centuries in that country.

General aspect

Medium sized dog. Its conformation is quite light. The body has the shape of an elongated rectangle. Its hair is of medium thickness, dark in color. Of good proportions. Morphologically interesting breed in many aspects.

This Hound is known for his extraordinary sense of orientation, which is considered the best of all dog breeds. Its sense of smell is also developed. It is known for its consistency in following a fresh track or track, even for hours, giving voice and without weakening. Used, both in the past and now, for hunting wild boar and carnivores. He is also trained as a guard and defense dog, with excellent results. Active, living temperament; in the family he is calm and always friendly, but it is not a dog that can live in an apartment. He loves being outdoors.
