Description of the route
The Volturno River, like all the waterways of some significance, is affected by major migratory routes. In our province, the river has two staging areas for birds. One of them is represented by "Variconi" at the mouth of the river, in the municipality of Catelvolturno (EC) which is currently described as a regional reserve according to LR 74/80.
The other, Oasis of Wildlife Protection that the Province of Caserta with GP256 Resolution of 25.07.2000 establishes and manages the LIPU, is the destination area of this excursion, before the ENEL cross and falling within an area. which mainly affects the municipality of Capua, S. Angelo in Formis, and that of Pontelatone but also the territories of Piana di Monte Verna and Castel di Sasso for an estimated extension of about 750 ha.
The area extends in an East - West direction between the Annibale bridge and the Scafa bridge near the Fagianeria. It develops in length for about 5 km (the river extends thanks to the loops, for 8.4 km), has a maximum width of about 2.7 km with an altitude that varies from 26 to 52 meters s.l.m. and it is located at an online distance of 29 km from the sea (57 along the river path). Also in this area, the right side of the river is affected by three tributaries: Rio Savone dei Mulini, Rio S. Giovanni and Rio Pisciariello, which is surprising, the Rozza spring flows inside the reservoir.
The cross remains closed for about ten months of the year, raising the water level of 8.5 meters and thus flooding of the surrounding land creating a wetland of 125 ha (full invaded 174 ha).
The remaining land is not flooded consists of small plots cultivated mostly in forage and fruit trees. In the NE area there is CIRIO, an extensive livestock farm with a large portion cultivated forage. Finally we note the presence of a clay pigeon shooting range on the left bank upstream of the crossbar.

Flora and fauna
The vegetation is the typical riparian one subject to periodic flooding. We therefore find, starting from the water, the amphibious polygon, the knotty potamoget, the straw, the cattail, the yellow lily and the semi-submerged rush; more on the shore among the tree species we find the shrubby red willow and the white willow, while freed from the shore, the white poplar and the alder.
The fish fauna is composed of the presence of crucian carp, chub, tench, rudder, carp, barbel, eel, red fish and sun perch.
Among the mammals there is to report the presence of the fox, the badger, the weasel, the otter, the hedgehog and given the proximity of the woods, the stone marten. Among those related to water we have the reddish vole and the water shrew.
Reptiles are present with specimens of cervone, rat snake and collared snake, among the amphibians we point out the green frog, the common toad, the Italian newt, the latter species, of exclusive relevance of southern Italy, is rapidly declining.
As regards the 'birds must be stressed the importance of this area because we are in the presence of a rich ecosystem and jointed with species not sporadic and certainly interesting, provided ideal habitat conservation on disturbed.
The presence of numerous typical marsh waders is noted. We find among the Rallidae: coot, moorhen, porciglione; among ardeidi: gray heron, purple heron, great egret, Squacco heron, night heron, bittern, bittern; among the Podicipeds: great crested grebe and little dip; among the Anatidae: pochard, tufted duck, pintail, marzaiola, shoveler and mallard; between Recurvirostri: avocet, stilt Italy; among the Piarists: snipe, curlew, godwit, piro piro; among the keratids: lapwing.
Among the Silvidae we have: river nightingale, beccamoschino, cannaiola, cannareccione, ococotto, beccafico, blackcap, green luì, small and large, ruler and floret; among the paridae we have: cince spp .; among the egitalidi: codibugnolo; among the golds: oriole; among the Lanids: having them spp .; among the alcedinids: kingfishers and the finches and the hoopoes with the hoopoe are well represented. Cranes, storks and pink flamingos liven up the site every early spring.
Among the birds of prey we marsh harriers, buzzards, black kites, kestrels and red-footed falcon and the nocturnal bird of prey with daytime habits eared owl.
Among the sightings we remember that of June 5, 1990: reported at the Pheasant 18 cuckoo hawks between males and females, and that of March 15, 1992: 100 cormorants, 20 snipes and 19 avocets reported, while on the following day, 20 gray herons were reported . It must be said that the latter shuttle between this site and the pond of the English Garden of the Royal Palace of Caserta where they have a dormitory.
There are two possible accesses to visit the most interesting areas both from the point of view of the landscape but above all from the wildlife point of view: coming from Caserta or Capua and traveling along the S.P. 336 former S.S. Sannitica No. 87 to Caiazzo at km 35 you see a dirt road on the left at a ruined farmhouse: The Farmhouse Conte Mauro. The turn into pulling straight to forage among the fields until you reach a clearing places "Salicelle" where, with good binoculars, you can make interesting observations.
The other entrance is located a little further on, always on the right of the same road, almost in front of the sports hall of Castel Morrone. You take it and always keep left until you reach a point where the river can be seen on both the right and the left. Here, in fact, there is the narrowest point of the path that will lead to "Lagnone" on whose left you can see a dense riparian forest of white willows with an abundant undergrowth on whose margins, towards the river, there are meadows of cattails and straws.
