Origin, diffusion and economic characteristics

Population of geese with traits and similar characteristics once typical of all Campania, now widespread mainly in the threshing floors of the high Caserta and Sannio.
In photos and paintings between 700 and early 900 depicting images of rural life of Campania landscapes there are geese with white plumage with irregular size and gray halos, to want to underline the presence of specimens with such characteristics in the region. This plumage was obviously not the result of a targeted selection, but the result of completely random rural crossings that took place in farms and farms where the animals were raised. In Campania the breeding of the goose has always been a niche: it was considered more tiring and less advantageous than that of the hens, therefore there were few raised animals; the eggs and meat that were obtained supplemented the mass or farm production; they were left free for the farm or the farm feeding on what they found during grazing, in the evening the diet was integrated with garden waste and a few grains.
In 2019 the discovery at a dairy nestled in the countryside of Mastrati, a hamlet of Pratella (inside the Matese park) of a group of geese ascribable to this population gave way to the recovery process; subsequently specimens were also spotted in Amorosi and Castelpoto (BN).

Morphological characteristics

Goose of medium size, rustic and resistant to cold and disease; very noisy, aggressive and territorial, especially if raised in a group, it makes impossible to breed promiscuously with other low court birds. It has white plumage with halos and irregular gray patches that vary from subject to subject; it can hatch if you give it space and have the foresight to leave the eggs, otherwise it will lay a fair number of eggs. The hatchlings have hatched yellow brown spots.
